Humanism in China (photobook)
The Guangdong Museum of Art
For two years, a Chinese curatorial committee from the Guangdong Museum of Art (in Guangdong, China) travelled to twenty provinces and viewed an estimated 100,000 photographs by 1,000 photographers, and the team selected 601 photos taken between 1951 and 2003 by 248 photographers. Thus, the first major museum collection of documentary photographs taken by China's own photographers was assembled. This compact photo-book features all 601 of the exhibition's photographs, offering an extraordinary opportunity to glimpse into rural and urban daily life in China, beyond the glossy veneer of the economic boom.
