

Language
Ben Wang is Senior Lecturer of Language and Humanities at China Institute and he also teaches Chinese at the United Nations. He has lectured extensively on classical Chinese literature, literati painting, calligraphy and theater at Columbia University, Yale University, Williams College, New York University, the Smithsonian Institution, National Gallery of Art, the Lincoln Center, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others. As a translator, Mr. Wang received the National Prize in literature translation awarded by the National Literary Association of Taiwan. He was awarded Outstanding Citizen of New York City by the New York City Council in 2003. Since 1989, Mr. Wang has translated 39 classical Chinese poetic dramas into English.
Judy Deng holds a BA degree in English Language and Literature and a MA in Educational Psychology. She had been a language instructor at Tianjin Medical University in China for 13 years before coming to the States in 1995.
Currently, she is teaching at the United Nations Headquarters, Saint Ann’s School and China Institute where she has been teaching since 2003. She has years of experience teaching the Chinese language at all levels, including HSK-Prep and medical Chinese.
Fan Guan earned an M.A. from Ohio University in International Affairs. She has taught Chinese at Berlitz and the United Nations. Ms.Guan has been teaching Chinese since 1982, and has been on the China Institute faculty since 1996.
Yuming Guo, a graduate of the Foreign Languages Department of Beijing Teachers College, has an M.A. in Liberal Studies from Brooklyn College, and has done Ph.D. work in the field of International Education at New York University. She currently teaches Chinese at St. Ann's School, and has taught at China Institute since 1986. She regularly takes her high school students to China during summer for study-travel programs.
Dela Xiao Jiao holds a BA in English Language and Literature and a MA in
English and French Literature. She also received two Certificates in
teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, one from Beijing Normal
University and the other from Beijing Language and Culture University.
She is Senior lecturer in New York University where she has been
teaching since 1990. She served as Coordinator of Chinese Program in NYU
and Director of NYU-in-Nanjing study-abroad program from 2004 to 2006.
She has been teaching in China Institute since 2004. Her teaching
interestes include Chinese language at all levels, Chinese culture,
Chinese poetry, modern Chinese fiction, and computer-aided Chinese.
Janet Lai holds an M. Phil. in Chinese from the University of Hong Kong and a B.A in Chinese Language and Literature from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. For the past three years, she was a full-time instructor at New York University, where she taught elementary through advanced Cantonese. She has also taught technical medical terminology in both Mandarin and Cantonese to students at the NYU Medical School since 2003, and has been a Cantonese instructor at China Institute since 2001. Her new book, “Living Language—Chinese Course Book”, will be published by Random House in the summer of 2006.
Danqing Li has a diploma in International Business from Beijing University of Chemical Technology, and a BA in General Studies and an MBA in Finance from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, New Jersey. She has a passion in Chinese language, culture, and literature. She dedicates her strength in business Chinese, with her understanding of the Chinese society and her business background in Asia. She hopes that her teaching would contribute to bridging the understanding of eastern and western cultures, and would be an enjoyable learning experience. She started part-time teaching with China Institute in the Private Tutoring Program since 2004.
Hailong Wang has an M.A. in Linguistics/Anthropology from Columbia University and a B.A. in Chinese Language and Literature from Xuzhou Teachers College. He has taught Chinese in both China and the U.S., beginning in 1981, and is involved in developing new Chinese teaching materials.
Ping Wang earned an M.A. from Long Island University in TESOL (Teachers of English for Speakers of Other Languages) and a B.A. from Peking University, Beijing, China in Western Languages and Literatures. She has been teaching Chinese as a second language to foreign students since 1983, first at Beijing Language Institute for nine years. After moving to the U.S. she taught at the United Nations and the City College of New York (CUNY). She currently teaches at China Institute in the Adult Language Program and Private Tutoring Program, at New York University (NYU) and at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice (CUNY).
Joyce Wang
Wendy Wang graduated from Dan Jiang University, Taiwan, with a B.A. in Chinese literature. Ms. Wang has taught Chinese to foreign students at Taiwan University and was a broadcaster at SINO Broadcasting.
Anna Wu
Hong Wu a Beijing Native, has her M.S. in Applied Linguistics from Queens College, and received her B.A. degree in English from Beijing Normal College of Foreign Languages. She has taught both English and Chinese as a Professor and has extensive language teaching and teachers’ training experiences both in the United States and in China, particularly with college and adult learners. In addition, Hong Wu serves as the Associate Director of the Asian/American Center at Queens College, which engages in community-oriented research that analyzes the multicultural diaspora experience of Asians in the Americas.
Meiling Wu has a B.A. from Beijing Normal University, taught for many years at Columbia University as well as Hunter College, and has been teaching at China Institute since 1979.
Shujen Yeo is a native of Taiwan who has also lived for years in the cities and countryside of Fujian Province. She has a bachelor's degree from the University of Washington, and has taught Chinese at the University of Maryland. Her husband is a linguist of Chinese with whom she has collaborated in the compilation of Chinese teaching materials. Currently, she is an instructor for China Institute’s Private Tutoring Program.
Steve Zhang
Xiaodan Zhang received her B.A. in Chinese Literature and Language from East China Normal University, and is a former Editor of the Chinese Social Science Publishing House in Beijing. Ms. Zhang has extensive literary translation experience. She received an M.A. in Women's Studies from CUNY, and an M.A. in Sociology at Columbia University, where she is currently a doctoral candidate.
Ruixue Zhao has a B.A. in English from Teachers Training College in Tianjin, and studied teaching for two years at Midway College in Kentucky. She received an M.A. in Sociology of Education at Columbia University Teacher's College, and an M.A. in Linguistics at Beijing Foreign Studies University.
Studio
Alex Hing is a senior student of Grandmaster William C.C. Chen and instructor at Master Chen's Manhattan studio, and has been practicing Asian martial arts for over 25 years. He is a New York region Yang style gold medalist and third-ranking international heavyweight push hands competitor. He has taught Taijiquan at China Institute for 10 years.
Sungsook Setton has been trained in brush painting and calligraphy under Chinese and Korean masters. She has also studied Western art in Germany, U.K., and U.S., where she obtained a BFA at Stony Brook University and is currently working on her MFA. Sungsook’s work has been widely seen in the US, U.K., and Korea and is the recipient of many prizes and awards, including the “Best of Show” award at the National Exhibition of the Sumi-e Society of America, Inc. She has taught Chinese brush painting classes at China Institute for the past 3 years on subjects which include landscapes and plants and the use of color.
Jiaxuan Zhang earned a B.A. in Cinema and Photography from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and an M.A. in Cinema Studies from New York University. He started practicing Chinese calligraphy in his youth, and has been teaching for more than ten years.
Chinese for Children
Shi Hong Qu Aldin is an actress by profession, having studied at the prestigious Shanghai Theater Academy followed by a career of numerous performances for stage, film, and television. In the U.S., Ms. Aldin's work has included participation in the Guggenheim Museum China 5,000 Years Exhibition Project, and teaching Mandarin, first to adults, and now focusing on children. Ms. Aldin has been teaching at China Institute since 1998.
Lily Shen graduated from Nanjing Normal University with a B.A. in English. She has an M.A. in Bilingual Education and another in Applied Linguistics, both from Columbia University Teacher's College. She has been teaching at China Institute since 1999, and in New York City schools since 1990.
Wendy Wang graduated from Dan Jiang University, Taiwan, with a B.A. in Chinese literature. Ms. Wang has taught Chinese to foreign students at Taiwan University and was a broadcaster at SINO Broadcasting. She teaches Chinese for Parents at China Institute.
("Jenny") Qi Qing Zhang has a B.A. from the Shanghai Foreign Language Institute and is completing her Masters at New York Institute of Technology in Communication Arts. Ms. Zhang has been teaching children with China Institute since 2000. Ms. Zhang also works as a translator and is fluent in Chinese, English, and Russian.
