Director of Development

The Position
The ideal candidate will be a highly accomplished professional with a distinguished and proven track record of achieving significant major gift charitable support, and experience in implementing capital campaigns. The Director of Development reports directly to the President, and is responsible for the overall strategy and management of the Institute’s fundraising efforts. This includes identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding gifts from individuals, foundations and government organizations; management of grant proposals; oversight of annual fundraising events; and implementation of annual giving appeal. S/he will work closely with the President, Executive Vice President and staff to align the Institute’s fundraising efforts with the strategic directions and needs of the organization. The successful candidate will be experienced with the financial management of an international non-profit or for-profit organization, or an academic/research institution.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have strong management, writing and inter-personal skills, and the vision to motivate and lead the six member development department in a collegial environment. The Director should have a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience of fundraising experience, with the ability to show progressive achievements in personal solicitation, effective board training, and the ability to create a high performing and sustainable financial development program. Proficiency with Raiser’s Edge and Microsoft programs required. Experience working with an international organization is preferred.

Director of Finance
China Institute is seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Finance to manage the financial operations of the Institute.
The Position
The Director of Finance, reporting to the President and under direction of the Board of Trustees, is responsible for the overall financial management of the Institute’s resources. This includes accounting, budgeting, grants management, cash management and oversight of endowment, audit compliance, and reporting.
The Director of Finance will be responsible for developing and implementing processes and procedures to support all China Institute programs. S/he will provide the Institute with reliable and responsive accounting and finance services and will work closely with the President and staff members to align the Institute’s accounting and finance systems with the strategic directions and needs of the organization.
Specific Responsibilities
- Oversee organizational accounting, financial statement preparation, and internal and external reporting in compliance with US GAAP, US Government, and other applicable regulations;
- Oversee grant and contract management;
- Coordinate annual budgeting process and periodic forecasts, and monitor monthly and quarterly performance against budget;
- Manage staff benefits and other costs to provide excellent service at the lowest possible cost;
- Develop, implement, and update written policies, procedures, and systems that govern financial functions to ensure appropriate internal controls and maximize operational efficiency;
- Provide guidance to management and the Board on financial implications of organizational strategies and plans;
- With the President, act as a liaison to the Finance and Audit Committees of the Board of Trustees;
- Oversee the external audit process;
- Assess and manage insurance portfolio;
- Assess and monitor endowment investments account, and coordinate with investment consultant;
- Monitor cash management activity, including the receipt, disbursement, investment, and custody of funds;
- Undertake special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will be experienced with the financial management of an international non-profit or for-profit organization, or an academic/research institution.
The ideal candidate will have strong management and interpersonal skills, and the vision to build, motivate and lead the accounting/finance department in a collegial environment. S/he will have financial acumen and technical expertise in not-for-profit finance, accounting, auditing, and compliance matters as well as the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, managing several projects simultaneously. An understanding of foundation and US government donor contracting and financial reporting requirements and regulations is preferred. S/he will possess excellent English language written and oral communication skills.
The CFO should have either a CPA or MBA equivalent degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience in a related field. Preference will be given to those who have a strong background with grants and funding. Experience working with an international organization is preferred.

Program Manager, Confucius Institute

Dean of the Confucius Institute
The Position
The Manager, Confucius Institute works closely with the Dean of the Confucius Institute at China Institute to carry out existing and future Confucius Institute programs. These programs currently include: collaboration with a prominent university in Shanghai, China to develop and manage a professional development program for Mandarin language teachers and other related initiatives; managing four K-12 professional development workshops per year in the United States and/or in China relating to current pedagogy and methodology for teaching the Mandarin language in American classrooms; and supporting China Institute’s work as co-leader of a New York State Task Force relating to developing Mandarin language programs in NYS schools.
The position requires substantial interface with China Institute’s adult, high school and children’s language programs, as well as the Institute’s other K-12 professional development program, Teach China program.
Specific Responsibilities
- Assisting New York Chinese Language Task Force in its various tasks.
- Managing professional development program for K-12 Mandarin language teachers, in coordination with Shanghai-based university.
- Managing training and placement of Chinese language teachers for short-term teaching assignment in the U.S.
- Organizing workshops for teacher trainees.
- Initiating collaboration with various strategic partners in Chinese teachers’ professional development projects.
- Responding to student & teachers trainees’ suggestions, concerns and inquiries.
- Contributing to development of China Institute Website presence for the programs, as well as promotional/informational materials and publicity strategies.
- Develop and manage budget; write reports and updates regarding expenditures, and assist in writing grant requests for the program.
- Promote maintenance and development of clear, organized records and reports and process, in timely fashion, vendor payments.
- Participate in, and/or present at, relevant professional conferences, meetings, and other events.
- Stay abreast of current thinking regarding, and technology supporting, Chinese language pedagogy and methodology in K-12 classrooms.
Qualifications
- Bachelor degree required, advanced degree preferred, in relevant subject areas. Education or training in Mandarin Chinese language education and foreign language methodology strongly preferred.
- At least two years of experience in Chinese language teaching, preferably in K-12 public school environment and/or project management in not-for-profit organization.
- Experience with, or strong interest in, professional development for teachers strongly preferred.
- Excellent Mandarin Chinese and English communication skills; native Mandarin speaker preferred.
- Strong administrative and computer skills, including MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Internet.
- Some travel to China, and US-based conferences is required.

Digital Initiatives Support Specialist
Reports to:Executive Vice President
The Position
The Digital Initiatives Support Specialist will be responsible for creating and implementing the technical aspects of a variety of digital initiatives throughout China Institute, with initial early focus on, and support of, the Education Department. This position will provide critical support to several major strategic initiatives, and will report to the Executive Vice President. The Digital Initiatives Support Specialist will also coordinate closely with staff and teachers throughout the Institute. The position will support and work closely with China Institute’s Web Master with respect to additions or changes to the Institute’s Web site. Finally, the Digital Initiatives Support Specialist will also be responsible for working closely with China Institute’s Office Manager, to ensure that China Institute’s technology infrastructure remains up-to-date, and will be expected to provide timely guidance to Institute staff with respect to training on how to best leverage the Institute’s infrastructure (both hardware and software).
The Digital Initiatives Support Specialist will also be required to develop and maintain an annual budget in support of the Institute’s technology requirements.
Specific Responsibilities
- Provide technical guidance and support to users for all components of the Windows-based network including, but not limited to, hardware, software and operating system, network security including anti-virus software, firewalls, data recovery management and remote access.
- Troubleshoot and provide problem resolution for simple network problems. Work with China Institute’s network infrastructure vendor and act as the main interface with the vendor.
- Research new technologies and assist in their implementation as they are adopted.
- Aid in the installation, repair and configuration of servers and other various network elements including, but not limited to PCs, routers and switches.
- Perform updates and troubleshoot China Institute Web sites including, but not limited to, changing photos, videos, content, etc. Monitor website traffic and provide reports.
- Manage contracts with local and national vendors.
- Manage the organization’s telecommunications needs including multiple phone systems, mobile phones and internet access devices.
- Manage and support Blackbaud’s Financial Edge and Raiser’s Edge applications. Act as the lead technical staff member to work with Blackbaud and get upgrades successfully installed and running.
- Manage an IT budget, which supports the approval and obtaining of equipment, as well as maintaining licensing agreements and inventories.
Qualifications
- College graduate or equivalent experience.
- One to three years experience in IT Support, Help Desk, or relevant field.
- Eloquent, intelligent self-starter with excellent communication skills.
- Minimum of three years experience with Windows 2000/2003 networks and Microsoft Office applications.
- Knowledge of installing and upgrading applications (i.e. Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge and Financial Edge).
- Experience with (D)HTML, Javascript (and AJAX), SQL servers and maintenance of websites (website development desirable but not required).
- Understand networks, their components and interactivity (especially between different OS platforms).
- Experience with system administration.
- Familiarity with ColdFusion a plus.
- Understanding of and experience with project management (communicating specifications to developers) a strong plus.
- Background, training, or strong interest in field of Education highly desirable.

Teach China Program Associate
Teach China, China Institute's professional development for K-12 educators, is seeking a dynamic and experienced program associate to help plan, coordinate and administer various educational initiatives. The ideal candidate will have an academic background in Chinese history, literature, art history, anthropology or international studies; as well as experience dealing with teachers and administrators in the public and private educational systems. Duties specifically involve planning group travel to China as well as accompanying and administering educational tours of China; liaison with the New York Board of Education After School Professional Development Program; assisting in outreach efforts; assisting in grant applications and reporting on grants. Excellent writing, research and interpersonal skills are required, as is a readiness to travel to China. An MA degree, Chinese language proficiency and experience living and traveling in China highly desirable. Minimum 2-3 years of related experience.
