Family Programs

Family Programs at China Institute serve to cultivate an interest in China by curating family-friendly, authentic programs and events for all ages. Activities span from holiday festivals to seasonal celebrations to cultural workshops. Our holiday festivals and cultural events provide your family with the opportunity to experience Chinese culture by celebrating some of China’s most important holidays and festivals with hands-on activities, crafts, performances, story-telling and much more.

China Institute, in collaboration with the Downtown Cultural Group, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, the Downtown Alliance, NYC & Company, River to River, and Make Music New York is participating in Night at the Museums. Join us for this opportunity to experience 15 of Lower Manhattan’s museums and historic sites. China Institute will be celebrating its new Downtown headquarters as well as its upcoming fall exhibition: Art in a Time of Chaos: Masterworks from Six Dynasties China, 3rd-6th Centuries.

Chinese New Year Family Celebration: The Year of The Monkey

Kick off the Year of the Monkey with a free lion dance and kung fu performance in front of our new space at 100 Washington Street. Following the lion dance, join us inside China Institute for traditional food and New Year-themed workshops and activities including dumpling making, paper cutting, and a special Year of the Monkey craft.

We All Live in the Forbidden City Book Launch Party & Family Festival

China Institute is kicking off the next stage of our publishing and educational program We All Live in the Forbidden City. Celebrate with us at our launch party for the new books Bowls of Happiness and What Was It Like Mr. Emperor? Life in China’s Forbidden City.

At this family festival celebrating Chinese history and culture, there will be performances, games, crafts, and more. Prizes will be given out throughout the day and to the first 50 guests.

Poetry & Kite Building Workshop at Poets House

Would you like to explore the Chinese arts of poetry and kites? Then join Poets House and China Institute for this fun family workshop where you will learn about Chinese culture and get the chance to make your own kite. Participants will learn about Chinese poetry and symbols, write their own poem, design their own kite, then fly it over the Hudson River! The workshop will be held at Poets House in Battery Park City.
