Your child will learn Mandarin Chinese language and culture through songs, stories, games and art projects in a student-centered classroom environment. Classes are taught by native or near native Mandarin speakers with extensive experience teaching Mandarin Chinese to children age 3-13 years old. Snacks and materials are provided. The courses are throughout the academic year, divided into trimesters. Enrollment is limited.

Beginner: Levels A & B

Levels A & B (3-8 years old)

This class is designed for children age 3-9 years old with little or no Mandarin Chinese background. Through fun activities, songs, and rhymes, children learn to communicate ideas that are relevant to daily life in Chinese.Additionally, the fundamentals of Chinese characters, including basic strokes and stroke order, as well as Pinyin, are introduced.The children also learn about basic sentence patterns and aspects of Chinese culture.

Immersion Class

Levels A, B , C, D & E (3-9 years old)

The class is designed for Chinese with a background in Mandarin Chinese.The class instruction will be 100% in Mandarin Chinese.For A class, children meet twice per week. During class, children will learn vocabulary and knowledge of the Chinese language and culture through storytelling, singing songs, reciting ancient poems, nursery rhymes, and many other fun activities.Children will gain more confidence in Chinese speaking skills.

Building on the foundation of previously-learned Mandarin Chinese, children will learn to make grammatically sound sentences. Games and hands-on activities present fun ways to reinforce material.

ADVANCED: LEVEL E, LEVEL F Advanced level I & II

Level E & F (8-11 years old)

In this level, students start getting familiar with complicated sentence patterns and grammar that meet the demands of daily communication. Students are expected to engage smoothly in Chinese dialogue, and to be able to read Chinese article and write short passages with Pinyin. Exercises and tests are used to help students consolidate their knowledge of the Chinese language.

Registration

  • Registration for Children and Youth programs is on a first-come, first-served basis. For registration, please contact Children and Youth program at (212) 744-8181, ext. 110, or email celmore@chinainstitute.org.
  • Registration for classes cannot be made without payment.
  • Upon registration, a letter of confirmation is not issued. A copy of the receipt of your payment is available upon request.
  • Classes are not available on a pro-rated basis.

Class Transfers

  • Transfers for classes must be requested by telephone or in writing before the third session.

Cancellation

  • If a child must be withdrawn from a Children and Youth program for medical reasons that render the child unable to participate successfully in the class, a pro-rated refund may — in the discretion of China Institute — be issued upon submission of a note signed by the child’s physician explaining the medical circumstances requiring withdrawal.

Cancellations by China Institute

China Institute reserves the right to cancel or modify classes or change faculty assignments when necessary and will make every effort to notify registrants in advance and/or accommodate them in other courses. If this is not possible, China Institute will evaluate whether a refund or credit should be issued. Courses may be canceled for insufficient enrollment between the first and second session. Should this occur, the students enrolled will receive a full refund or credit, except for the non-refundable registration fee of $50.
