Introduction to China: Teaching to the Standards

Understanding China through the Arts
|
|
This course examines Chinese culture and society through a critical engagement with
various Chinese artistic traditions, including the visual arts, music, literary
arts, and the performing arts. After an initial overview that familiarizes
participants with Chinese aesthetic concerns and historical periodization, the
course proceeds to carefully study bronze-age vessels, Buddhist sculpture, literati
painting and poetry, architecture, woodcuts and propaganda posters, among other
mediums. Participants also tour China Institute’s Spring 2008 art exhibition,
Enchanted Stories: Chinese Shadow Theater in Shaanxi, participate in a hands-on
calligraphy workshop, visit Christie’s New York auction house, hear a musical
performance, and join in an interview with a contemporary Chinese avant-garde
artist. Course participants develop an understanding of the personal and cultural
forces that have shaped artistic communication and how the arts in turn have shaped
Chinese culture, both past and present.
