Art Education Programs

Discover China Through Art

China Institute Gallery’s art education program, Discover China Through Art, presents "Festival: Good Luck & Prosperity". The three-tiered program features a docent-led gallery talk, a short video, and a hands-on art workshop. The video presentation will introduce Chinese New Year Festival. Following the video, a gallery talk will guide participants in discussing approximately ninety tanslucent and dramatically colored shadow puppets from the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). The puppets depict famous legends and stories that reflect customs inttegral to Chinese life. Concluding the tour, an interactive workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to create their own artwork inspired by the exhibition. Participants will create a New Year decotration in Workshop I (February 4 - February 29, 2008) or a paper cut-out in Workshop II (March 3 - May 9, 2008).

All age groups welcome.
Programs must be reserved three weeks in advance.
Maximum 25 people per group.

Gallery Tours

Here a student learns the fundamentals of Chinese landscape painting. From a series of dots, dashes and lines he can paint a forest. This adult group is learning Chinese calligraphy and the etymology of some Chinese characters.
