Enchanted Stories: Chinese Shadow Theater in Shaanxi

As the first shadow puppet exhibition from China to be presented in the United States, this exhibition
presents rare shadow puppets dating to the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). Drawn from the rich collection of
the Shaanxi Provincial Art Gallery, approximately 90 puppets made of animal hide with dramatic pigments are
presented thematically through famous Chinese legends and characters, exploring the history and life
of the Chinese throughout the centuries.

Group Tours
Discover China Through Art (DCTA), an art educational program for all age groups, offers
programs along with the current exhibition, Enchanted Stories: Chinese Shadow Theater in Shaanxi.
After a docent-led tour of the exhibition, groups are introduced to the ceremonial traditions of
the Chinese New Year. A hands-on workshop concludes the tour, offering a variety of activities such
as calligraphy on red paper to make a festive New Year decoration. One-hour group exhibition lectures
may also be arranged.
Programs must be reserved three weeks in advance. Maximum 25 people per group.
January 31-May 11
$90 per group. Fees vary for evening tours, lectures & off-site presentations. Off-site presentation
available for the physically disabled.
