Chinese for Children Class

Chinese for Children

Children learn a dynamic mix of Chinese language and culture in active classroom environments. Classes are taught by native Mandarin speakers with extensive experience teaching children. Snacks and materials are provided. The courses are one year long, divided into trimesters. Enrollment is limited. Registration for the fall begins in July.


BEGINNER: LEVELS A & B

Levels A & B (3-5 year olds)

Children learn basic Mandarin through fun interactive activities, such as songs and games.

Goals: Numbers, colors, parts of the body, animals, food, family members, and basic conversational phrases.

Level A Starts September 25 or 27
Tuesdays or Thursdays ~ 2-3 PM
$930 member / $990 non-member
Plus $20 non-refundable registration fee

Level B Starts September 25 or 27
Tuesdays or Thursdays ~ 4-5:30 PM
$1080 member / $1155 non-member
Plus $20 non-refundable registration fee

Level A (5-8 year olds)

Students still have fun singing songs and playing games, but they also learn simple grammatical structures. Teachers stress the spoken language yet also present basic Chinese characters and pinyin (a Romanization system).

Goals: Material covered in younger classes, plus simple sentences and 20 basic characters. Graduate to Intermediate Level C.

Thursdays ~ 4-5:30 PM

INTERMEDIATE: LEVELS C & D

Level C (5-7 & 6-9 year olds)

Building on the foundation of previously learned nouns and verbs, children learn to make grammatically sound sentences. Games and hands-on activities present fun ways to reinforce material.

Goals: Explaining abilities and likes and dislikes. Describing clothing and mastering "to be" and "to have" sentence structures. Asking about days, dates, and weather. Recognizing 30 characters. Graduate to Intermediate Level D.

Tuesdays or Thursdays ~ 4-5:30 PM

Level D (6-8 & 7-9 year olds)

This class stresses complex sentences and students build on the simple statements they learned in lower levels. By the end of the course, students should have little difficulty engaging in functional conversations. Fun activities include student led conversations and interactive games

Goals: Explaining daily and school-related activities. Learning several ways to pose questions. Recognizing 50 characters. Graduate to Advanced Level E.

ADVANCED: LEVEL E & F

Level E (8-11 & 9-12 year olds)

Teachers introduce more complex sentence patterns: from "I like apples" to "Yesterday, I ate two apples." Students get the chance to engage in their own conversations and write their own books.

Goals: Ability to speak easily about family, friends, school, and recognizing 100 characters. Graduate to Advanced Level F.

Starts September 25 or 26
Tuesdays or Wednesdays ~ 4-5:30 PM
$1080 member / $1155 non-member
Plus $20 non-refundable registration fee

Level F (8-12 year olds)

This is our highest level course. The class is conducted mainly in Chinese. Besides introducing more vocabulary and longer sentence patterns, one third of the class time is allocated to writing and reading.

Goals: larger vocabulary, higher level of fluency in speaking, ability to read a short passage and to write a short essay.

Starts September 24
Mondays ~ 4-5:30 PM
