Year of the Rat Festivities
Gong Xi Fa Cai!
China Institute welcomes the Year of the Rat. People born in 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996
and 2008 are said to be bright, capable, flexible and hard-working. The Chinese New Year is
determined by the lunar calendar and this year it begins on February 10. Join us in the
celebration!
Lion Dance
Greet the Year of the Rat with a Lion Dance. This folk tradition is performed by martial
artists dressed in colorful costumes, accompanied by drums and gongs. This event is very
popular and only early arrival can guarantee a good view of the performance. The Lion Dance
is held on East 65th Street outside China Institute, so prepare for cold weather.

Dumpling-making
For hundreds of years, the dumpling has been the culinary symbol of the Chinese New Year. All
across northern China, families turn their kitchens into veritable dumpling factories, churning
out dumplings for family banquets. The small, pork-filled dish provides a tasty and tangible
expression of the good luck the family hopes for in the coming year. Participants in our workshop
experience this time-honored tradition for themselves, by wrapping their own dumplings and then
eating the results! We’ll also offer chicken and vegetarian dumplings.

Lantern Festival
The Lantern Festival is an important traditional Chinese festival, held on the 15th of the
first lunar month, marking the end of the New Year celebrations.
Lanterns of all shapes and sizes embellish the streets and houses of China. Under the moonlit
sky, people enjoy their last night of festivities with firecrackers, riddles, games, and more.
Families reunite to eat yuanxiao, a glutinous rice ball filled with red beans, sesame or peanuts.
To celebrate the Lantern Festival, families create their own lanterns to decorate their homes
and make their very own delicious snowy white yuanxiao.
