Chinese Language Summer Immersion Academy for High Schoolers
China Institute, through a generous grant from the U.S. government, will offer scholarships worth $3,000 each to 25 New York metro-area high school students to attend a six-week Chinese Language Summer Immersion Academy in New York City. To be eligible, applicants must have no prior Mandarin Chinese language background, and meet certain additional requirements.
Equivalent to one semester of high school Mandarin Chinese, the Academy will emphasize oral communication while also introducing students to Chinese reading and writing, and to the richness of Chinese culture through hands-on studio classes and local field trips in New York City.
The Academy will be held July 7, 2008 - August 15, 2008, Mondays through Fridays from 9:30 a.m. -3:30 p.m. at the Dalton School, 108 East 89th Street (between Lexington and Park Avenues) in New York City. Applicants who are selected will receive a small daily stipend for local transportation and lunch, in addition to the full scholarship.
Application Package and Open House
An Open House will be held at China Institute, 125 E. 65th Street, New York, NY 10065, on Thursday, April 24, 2008 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Prospective applicants and parents/guardians are welcome. RSVP no later than April 23.
An application package is available to download. The application deadline is May 8, 2008. Scholarship award notifications will be issued in late May 2008.
