    Woodcuts in Modern China, 1937-2008:
    Towards a Universal Pictorial Language

    Friday, September 17, 2010
    6:30PM – 8:30PM

    China Institute
125 East 65th Street, New York, NY

Join fellow Young Associates for a private reception and viewing of China Institute’s new exhibition, Woodcuts in Modern China, 1937-2008: Towards a Universal Pictorial Language. A guided tour of the exhibition follows the reception.

Though China has had a long history in woodcuts and printing, the western woodcut, printed with oil-based ink, was adapted in the early 20th century by Chinese artists searching for a simplified pictorial language that would resonate with the illiterate masses. They not only created the beginnings of communist art in China, but laid the foundation of modern Chinese art in the most general sense. While past scholarly publications and survey exhibitions have familiarized wider audiences with aspects of the modern Chinese woodcut movement, this exhibition is the first in the U.S. to present a comprehensive overview of the beginnings and development of this important art form during the modern period of Chinese history from the 1930s to the present.

  • The Best of Flushing, the other Chinatown:
Culinary Walking Tour with Ed Schoenfeld
and Banquet-Style Dinner at Imperial Palace Restaurant

    Saturday, June 12, 2010
    4:00pm – 8:00pm

    Flushing, Queens

The China Institute Young Associates invite you to join Ed Shoenfeld for a culinary walking tour of the other Chinatown – Flushing, Queens. After the walking tour, we will have a 10 course banquet-style dinner at Imperial Palace Restaurant with Mr. Schoenfeld.

Over the last 25 years the Chinese presence in Flushing has grown from a single Hong Kong-style Cantonese restaurant hidden in the basement of a then brand new bank building to the most vibrant Asian community on the East Coast. Initially populated by an increasing gentrifying demographic, the scene has repeatedly expanded to include new waves of residents; some of whom may have recently arrived from Guangzhou or Fujian, but might just have easily made their way from Manhattan’s Chinatown community with the goal of a more comfortable and suburban life.

As the community has expanded so has its Chinese food scene. Today it is home to some of the industry’s most authentic and interesting restaurants and street foods. It is the part of town where in addition to Beijing, Cantonese and Sichuan restaurants one can find cooking from places like Shandong, Dongbei, and Hangzhou. Mr. Schoenfeld, who has a professorial knowledge of Chinese cooking and a gift for creating successful and influential restaurants, will take you through Flushing’s food malls (the Golden Mall and Flushing Mall), and show you the best of Flushing’s restaurants, shops, food stores, and street food.

Mr. Schoenfeld is a restaurateur, consultant, and nationally recognized Chinese culinary expert. He has created or operated some of the industry’s most successful and influential restaurants, including New York’s Uncle Tai’s Hunan Yuan, Shun Lee, Pig Heaven, Auntie Yuan, Chop Suey Looey’s Litchi Lounge and Chinatown Brasserie. His work has been featured in The New York Times, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, New York Magazine, Gourmet Magazine, Saveur, and many other newspapers, books, and magazine.

At Imperial Palace Restaurant, Mr. Schoenfeld will guide us through a sumptuous dinner as we dine on: Steamed Oysters in XO Sauce, Peking Duck, Imperial Palace Seafood Soup, Scallop with Snow Pea Leaves, House Special Lamb Chops, Chicken over Minced Shrimp, Dungeness Crab with Sticky Rice, Ginger Scallion Lobster with E-Fu Noodle, Red Bean Soup and dessert.

    7:00 – 9:00PM

    China Institute Library
125 East 65th Street (between Park and Lexington Avenue), New York, NY

The China Institute Young Associates invite you to a special film screening of Win in China with Director Ole Schell. Win in China is a 60-minute documentary film that centers on the hit Chinese Television game show of the same name. This Donald Trump-like game show is the largest, most lucrative business plan competition in the world and serves as a metaphor for the entrepreneurial explosion in China now.

Over 120,000 entrepreneurs compete for prize money in excess of $5 million with the winner receiving nearly $1.5 million dollars to invest in a new business plan. Director Ole Schell was given unprecedented access to the show’s creator, the contestants and the judges. His documentary opens a window into Chinese capitalism, which differs in many ways from Western capitalism. Beneath the game show’s surface lies a nuanced, subtle view of Chinese business practices, ambitions, ethical norms and competitive behaviors.

Director Ole Schell, an NYU film school graduate, directs films in New York City. He just completed the award winning documentary "Picture Me" about the world of hi-fashion modeling due out theatrically this spring. He writes features for CNN.com and has produced radio on his experiences in China aired both on the BBC and National Public Radio. He is the recipient of the "Leonardo’s Horse Award" for best picture at the 2009 Milan International Film festival for Picture Me.

    China Institute Library
125 East 65th Street (between Park and Lexington Avenue), New York, NY

The China Institute Young Associates invite you to a special film screening of Young & Restless in China with Director/Producer Sue Williams. Young & Restless in China presents intimate portraits of nine ambitious young Chinese through the course of four years, examining the reality of their lives as they navigate their way through a changing country.

In 2004 Sue Williams and her small team began to follow nine young Chinese in their 20s and 30s for what would become the film Young & Restless in China. Each year thereafter, she returned to see how their jobs and personal relationships were unfolding, how they were changing and how they saw themselves.

Sue Williams founded Ambrica Productions with producer Kathryn Dietz in 1986 to produce quality documentaries of international scope and interest. China has always been on Williams’ personal radar screen. Her grandparents lived there for many years, and her mother was born and raised in Shanghai. 125 East 65th Street, New York, NY

Young Associates will have the opportunity to speak with Sara Judge McCalpin, President of China Institute, from 6 – 7PM. Guided tour of the exhibition follows.

Humanism in China: A Contemporary Record of Photography, originally organized by the Guangdong Museum of Art in Guangzhou in 2003, is the first major museum collection ever assembled in China of documentary photographs, produced by China’s own photographers, from 1951 through 2003. These photographs are of a very high aesthetic order, displaying an extraordinary range of human emotion and activity, urban and rural, public and private. They reflect the radical change China has gone through in the past half century and break through all the stereotypes of life in China that photography itself has sometimes been used to create.

    Alice Tully Hall, Starr Theater
    1941 Broadway (at 65th St.),
    New York, NY

Join your fellow China Institute members for a special event presenting Shen Wei Dance Arts at Lincoln Center Festival at the newly renovated Alice Tully Hall.
Hailed by the New York Times as “startlingly imaginative”, Shen Wei Dance Arts (SWDA) creates interdisciplinary, cross-cultural performance for forward-looking audiences. Each work by Artistic Director Shen Wei develops an original dance vocabulary incorporating visual and storytelling elements from the theater, Chinese opera, Eastern philosophy, traditional and contemporary visual art, and sculpture. The result, at turns figurative and abstract, combines performance with strong scenic elements to create a “fascinating fantasy in movement” (Sydney Herald Sun).

Artistic Director Shen Wei is a choreographer, director, dancer, painter and designer, and is widely recognized for his defining vision of an intercultural, interdisciplinary, utterly original mode of movement-based performance. For more info about Shen Wei Dance Arts, please go to http://shenweidancearts.org/.

For this performance, Shen Wei has created a three-part work to include an updated version of his captivating Re- I (Tibet), the equally compelling Re- II (Angkor Wat), and Re- III (New Silk Road), a piece that reflects his journey to China and back. This performance is approximately two hours and ten minutes with two intermissions.

Blooming in the Shadows:
Unofficial Chinese Art, 1974-1985

Friday, October 14, 2011
6:30 – 8:30pm

China Institute
125 East 65th Street, New York, NY

Join fellow Young Associates for a private reception and viewing of China Institute’s new exhibition, Blooming in the Shadows: Unofficial Chinese Art, 1974-1985.

Contemporary Chinese art has taken the art world by storm in the last decade through heralded museum exhibitions, well-read publications, and heavily attended art auctions. However, even with all this attention, few exhibitions have asked the question of how—against the background of thirty-five years of Socialist Realism—this internationally-oriented artwork suddenly appeared and why it captured the attention of the international art market. Blooming in the Shadows: Unofficial Chinese Art, 1974-1985 will introduce the work of three unofficial Chinese art groups who worked in this vein: the No Names, the Stars, and the Grass Society—all of which arose following the end of the Cultural Revolution and helped launch the avant-garde movement in China. These artists pursued creatively diverse paths to personal artistic freedom under the political circumstances of the time. Blooming in the Shadows will examine this work produced in the critical decade after the end of the Cultural Revolution leading up the Communist party’s 1985 decision to allow modern artistic practices.

ALONG THE YANGZI RIVER
Regional Culture of the Bronze Age from Hunan

Friday, February 25th, 6:30pm -8:30pm

China Institute Gallery
125 East 65th Street
New York, NY 10065

Join fellow Young Associates for a private reception and guided tour of China Institute’s new exhibition, Along the Yangzi River: Regional Culture of the Bronze Age from Hunan.

About the exhibition:
Uncover the mysterious story of the middle bank of the Yangzi River, one of the most significant cradles of Chinese civilization and a historical area for study of Chinese bronze culture. Several important excavations in the past few decades have enabled us to examine the undeveloped aspects of this culture through exquisite bronze vessels from the Hunan Provincial Museum. This exhibition will explore regional culture along the Yangzi River in three parts: the development and characteristics of regional bronzes, their function and patronage, and their cultural connection to Central China.
