Join China Institute Gallery this Asia Week for the launch of our inaugural Artist Talk at the 6th Orchid Pavilion Gathering, an annual literati get-together. Renowned art critic, Robert C. Morgan, and Director of China Institute Gallery, Willow Weilan Hai, will host a talk with three contemporary Chinese women artists based in the United States for decades – Guo Zhen, Lin Yan, and Liu Landing – to discuss identity and gender in contemporary Chinese art.
Orchid Pavilion Gatherings are an annual event at China Institute celebrating and encouraging artistic inspiration in the spirit of celebrated calligraphy sage Wang Xizhi’s (307 – 365) famous gathering with his poet friends on Mount Kuaiji.
Guo Zhen: One of the earliest explorers of female ink art after Chinese economic reform, and the founder of Guo Art Studio in New York City.
Lin Yan: Beijing born, since 2005 Lin Yan has been creating sculptural installations with Xuan paper; an ancient material, her work explores the intersection of modern cultures and traditions.
Liu Landing: A leading abstract brush calligrapher whose work explores the concepts of the individual family unit and social fulfillment.
Robert Morgan: A world-renowned art historian, author, critic, and educator who has lectured widely on the history and aesthetics of both Western and Asian art.
Willow Weilan Hai: Director of China Institute Gallery.
