Chinese American Literary Notables

May 14, 2022 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

To celebrate the Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the Renwen Society presents a lecture on May 14 on American writers of Chinese descent by UCLA Professor King-Kok Cheung, a renowned scholar of English and Asian American Studies. These writers grapple with issues of gender, racial, national and generational stereotypes within the tenuous matrix of transpacific relations. Professor Cheung will discuss 27 writers in nine clusters to show how they have preserved history and created worlds of imagination beyond the borders of nations.

King-Kok Cheung is Professor of English at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and a special advisor for the US-China Education Trust (USCET). She is the author of Articulate Silences and Chinese American Literature without Borders; the editor of Words Matter, Seventeen Syllables, An Interethnic Companion to Asian American Literature, Asian American Literature: An Annotated Bibliography, and the former coeditor of The Heath Anthology of American Literature. Her articles have appeared in Amerasia Journal, American Literary History, Biography, Bucknell Review, Cambridge Journal of China Studies, Canadian Review of Comparative Literature, Chinese Literature Journal, Foreign Literature, Foreign Literature Studies, MELUS, Milton Studies, PMLA, Positions, Shakespeare Quarterly, University of Toronto Quarterly, and Transnational Literature.

This lecture will be conducted in English.

Free, but advanced registration is requested.
