This Industry Updates program will focus on Chinese Art Market, presented by Nick Wilson from China Guardian (HK) Auctions. China Guardian is China’s oldest art-auction firm and one of the top leaders in the Chinese art auction market.
Nick has started his career in the Chinese Art since 1999, when he worked in the Asian works of art department at Christie’s South Kensington. Sensing a seismic shift in the Chinese art market, Nick moved within Christie’s to work in Hong Kong in 2006. Over the following seven years, Nick had the opportunity to work on seminal sales such as the sale of Important Jades from the Collection of Alan and Simone Hartman, Imperial Clocks from the Nezu Museum Collection, Important Chinese Lacquer from the Lee Family Collection and the Songzhutang Collection of Rhinoceros Horn Carvings among others. After becoming Head of Sale in Hong Kong, Nick decided to move to New York to explore different collecting tastes and meet new collectors. Nick was fortunate enough to be involved with the sale of the Ellsworth Collection, the Min Fanglei and many other important objects during his two years there as Head of Department. After 17 years at Christie’s, Nick decided to pursue a new challenge in 2016, returning with his family to Hong Kong to work for China Guardian, heading a new young team there to establish China Guardian as a leading force in the Hong Kong art market. In this session, Mr. Wilson will discuss the trends, pitfalls and opportunities of the Chinese art market.
