Classic Films for the New Year: The Wedding Banquet and Eat Drink Man Woman

February 5 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Brokeback Mountain; Life of Pi), one of today’s greatest filmmakers, launched his Hollywood career in the early 1990s with a series of three films, known collectively as the Father Knows Best trilogy. Together, they explore cultural and generational conflicts at the core of modern family life and offer a window into traditional family life and values in Taiwan.  Join us to ring in the Year of the Rat with two of these stunning classics: The Wedding Banquet and Eat Drink Man Woman.

The Wedding Banquet (喜宴), 1993

Simon and Wei-Tung are a gay couple living together in Manhattan. To defer the suspicions of Wei-Tung’s parents, Simon suggests a marriage of convenience between Wei-Tung and Wei-Wei, an immigrant in need of a green card. When Wei-Tung’s parents come to America for the wedding, they insist upon an elaborate banquet, resulting in several complications.

Eat Drink Man Woman (饮食男女), 1994

Director: Ang Lee
Language: Mandarin, with English subtitles

Wednesday, February 5, 2020
6:30 PM – 8:00 PM

Mr. Chu, a widower who is a master Chinese chef, has three unmarried daughters, each of whom challenges a narrow definition of traditional Chinese culture: Chu Jia-Jen, a school teacher nursing a broken heart who converted to Christianity; Chu Jia-Chien, a fiercely independent airline executive who carries her father’s culinary legacy but never got to pursue that passion; and Chu Jia-Ning, a college student who starts a relationship with her friend’s ex-boyfriend.  Each Sunday Mr. Chu makes a glorious banquet for his daughters, through whose tumultuous love lives the family navigates the evolution of old values into new ones.
