Start at 6:00 PM

The Good Earth, inspired by a Pearl S. Buck novel, follows the many ups and downs in the lives of Chinese farmers Wang Lung (Paul Muni) and O-Lan (Luise Rainer). Though the couple initially finds success farming their land, their fortunes decline, and lean times follow. Later, when Wang Lung and O-Lan once again reap bountiful harvests and raise a family, the presence of the beautiful young Lotus (Tilly Losch) complicates their lives. While contemporary reviews were positive, with the New York Times praising the film as “a superb translation of a literary classic,” modern viewers might be challenged to look past ‘30s era racial attitudes that led to white actors being cast to portray the film’s lead characters in yellowface. Indeed, while both Pearl Buck and Irving Thalberg, its director, initially intended the film to be cast with all Chinese or Chinese-American actors, they later chose not to, conceding that American audiences were simply not ready for such a film.

This film is in English.
