A prominent writer of the 20th-century China, Ling Shuhua was active between the 1920s and the 1950s with a host of influential publications of short stories, essays, translations, and a memoir that firmly established her foremost position in modern Chinese literature. Since most of her short stories were first published in Western journals, her fame as a diaspora female writer also extended beyond China. Through a transnational literary friendship with Virginia Woolf, Ling Shuhua entered the Bloomsbury circle, a constellation of writers, intellectuals, philosophers and artists based in London. Woolf held Ling in high regard for her brilliance and originality and labeled her as “the Chinese Katherine Mansfield”.
The Renwen Society presents a lecture on Ling Shuhua on April 9 by Prof. Lin Xiaoxia, a scholar who specializes in the study of the famous Chinese writer. With an introduction to Ling Shuhua’s extraordinary life during the turbulent and transitional era in the first half of the 20th-century China, Prof. Lin will explore Ling Shuhua’s significant and pioneering contribution to the construction of a world literary theory from a Chinese lens.
With a Ph.D. in comparative literature and world literature from Beijing Languages University, Dr. Lin Xiaoxia is currently an associate professor at Fujian University of Technology. Her publications include Ling Shuhua and World Literature and dozens of papers on Ling Shuhua and the diaspora literature.

华美人文学会美东时间4月9日晚8时至9时半（北京时间10日上午8时至9时半）特邀凌叔华研究专家林晓霞教授做“民国才女凌叔华与世界文学”专题讲座，讲述凌叔华的生平故事并对世界文学的中国版本提出自己的见解。
凌叔华，原名凌瑞唐，笔名有叔华、瑞唐女士、凌瑞棠等。原籍广东省番禺县，代表作有《绣枕》《古韵》等。夏自清认为：“和冰心一样，凌叔华写的也是妇女和儿童的故事，和冰心不一样的是，她一开始就显示出一种较成熟的感性和敏锐的心理观察，潜力也比冰心大。”李欧梵在《现代性的追求》一书中指出，“弗吉尼亚·伍尔夫的那份遗产只是传给了后来的两位女作家：凌叔华和张爱玲”。凌叔华与英国“布鲁姆斯伯里”派的重要成员弗吉尼亚·伍尔夫（Virginia Woolf，1882-1941）之间的交流和友谊是现代文学史上为人们所关注的，尤其是她与伍尔夫外甥朱利安·贝尔（Julian Bell）的恋情所津津乐道的趣事。
作为“现代评论派”、“新月派”、“京派”、“新闺秀派”作家的重要成员凌叔华是“五四”新文学运动的薰陶下成长起来的中国第一批有才华的现代女作家之一。凌叔华小说叙事艺术的文学史意义；凌叔华与朱利安·贝尔的文化翻译实践；凌叔华和“布鲁姆斯伯里派”的交往；弗吉尼亚·伍尔夫亲自指导凌叔华写的带有女权意识的英文自传《古韵》；凌叔华作为一位有着第三世界“大家闺秀”的文化背景、在中年之后生活在英国的中国现代流散作家等独特的身份，使她理所当然地成为一个具有“世界性”意义而被研究的对象，尤其是在全球化的世界文学背景下，中国现代文学已经基本完成了经典化的过程。
主讲嘉宾林晓霞， 2014年于北京语言大学获得比较文学博士学位。2012-2013年，作为北京语言大学—哈佛大学联合培养的在读博士研究生，在美国哈佛大学比较文学系访学一年，由大卫•达姆罗什教授指导在美期间的博士论文写作。2017年获得国家留学基金委全额资助，于2017.12—2019.2先后到美国宾夕法尼亚州立大学和哈佛大学做访问学者。现为福建工程学院人文学院副教授。主要研究比较文学与世界文学、翻译与当代西方文论。已发表英文论文两篇、专著《凌叔华与世界文学》（2019）和40余篇中文论文。
