Gourmet Food Circle: Little Tong Noodle Shop

Little Tong Noodle Shop pays homage to the beautiful Chinese province of Yunnan, offering savory, flavorful dishes based on rice noodles called mixian, as well as small plates showcasing local, seasonal ingredients, house-made pickles and specially crafted condiments and sauces inspired by the villages and multi-ethnic regions of southwest China. On Saturday, December 9, China Institute invites you to taste your way through Yunnan at this special event designed for our ongoing Gourmet Food Circle programming series. Following a round of savory appetizers, participants will enjoy a four-course tasting of the restaurant’s signature mixian noodle bowls, ending the afternoon with a round of dessert. Simone Tong, Little Tong Noodle Shop owner and head chef, will join the group to talk about Yunnan’s distinctive cuisine, and answer questions about the unique dishes that she has brought to life in New York.

China Institute’s Gourmet Food Circle brings together curious foodies with an adventurous appetite for all things China. Focusing on both Chinese and Chinese-inspired cuisine, we delve into the local New York food scene to create a cultivated, gourmet experience for participants to learn, taste, and explore.

Simone Tong is the chef-owner and the buck-stopper for Little Tong Noodle Shop. She was born in Chengdu, the capital of China’s southwestern Sichuan Province.

Simone Tong attended the Institute of Culinary Education in New York City, graduating with highest honors. She went to work at wd-50, Alder and 15 East. In the summer of 2016, she embarked on a three-month culinary and research adventure through Yunnan province. Starting from the capital city of Kunming, she visited the ancient towns of Dali and Lijiang, hiked through the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and trekked through the breathtaking Tiger Leaping Gorge, into the majestic Ganden Sumtsenling Monastery in Shangri-La bordering Tibet and Sichuan.

At each turn and in each ancient city, there is a magical recipe to be learned and adapted, and through her cooking, Chef Simone shares the story of the experience and the flavors and dishes experienced during that special time.
