The Mandarin “Lunch and Learn 午间中文” is a free, online, monthly ‘Read-Aloud’ series for Chinese language learners of all levels.
Join us to learn and practice Mandarin, while engaging with Chinese literature, poetry, history and more with fellow enthusiasts. Participants will enjoy live, interactive learning sessions with our language and cultural experts from home. Each session will start with a read-aloud in Mandarin of a carefully selected poem which represents both a touchstone to Chinese culture as well as text for practicing Mandarin language and pronunciation.
Since February 2020, our Lunch and Learn has covered three quintessential Chinese arts: qin (琴, the 7-string zither), calligraphy (书), and brush painting (画). It is said a classical Chinese scholar must also cultivate a fourth art, Chinese go (棋). Since around 4 A.D. it has been a tradition for intellectuals in China to perfect the ultimate art forms that express one’s wisdom, emotion, and philosophy of oneself and his/her relations to the universe. Join our May 7 workshop to complete your journey of learning these four art forms.
Shenzhan Liao (host): Head of School of Chinese Studies at China Institute.
Guest educators will be added for each session.
Recordings of all programs are available on China Institute’s special YouTube playlist.
