Paper-Cutting Workshop: The Art of Chinese New Year

February 8, 2020 @ 4:15 pm - 5:15 pm

Celebrate the Lantern Festival, the final day of Chinese New Year celebrations, with this special paper-cutting workshop from artist and teacher Hongyi He. Paper-Cutting is an important tradition and art form of Chinese folk life. During festivals and holidays like the Lunar New Year, every home must have some paper-cuttings adorning their walls, windows or doors. In this workshop, participants will learn basic skills of paper-cutting through folding and cutting the paper and create unique Year of the Rat and lantern pieces. This workshop is available for ages 6 and up.

Hongyi He has been awarded the title of “Chinese Folk Artist” by UNESCO, and is a 2012 New York Foundation for the Arts Folk/Traditional Arts Fellow. Her paper-cutting artwork has been collected by various museums and art galleries around the world. She is a professor of South-Central University for Nationalities in Wuhan, China, has been teaching and researching traditional Chinese folk arts since 1982 and serves as an active member of China Folklore Association, Asian Folklore Association, and China Paper-Cutting Artist Association.

This workshop is part of the “The Art of Chinese New Year” project. “The Art of Chinese New Year” is a vibrant, interactive experience where visitors of all ages can explore the Chinese New Year holiday and the traditional visual and performing arts related to it. Through displays, artist workshops, and hands-on activities visitors will learn about nianhua (New Year pictures), spring couplets, papercutting, shadow puppetry, and lion dances — all capturing the sights and sounds of the most important holiday and festival in China.
