Paul Monroe and His Chinese Students – U.S-China Collaboration on Chinese Educational Reforms during the 1920s -1930s

Paul Monroe is widely recognized for his important contributions to the development of the field of international and comparative education. Monroe’s far-reaching impact on education worldwide is best exemplified by his significant influence on modern Chinese education system, which he exerted through extensive fieldwork, lectures, and charity work spanning over three decades.

As one of the founders of China Institute in 1926 with John Dewey, Kuo Pingwen and Hu Shi, Paul Monroe served as the inaugural chair of the board of trustees of the Institute. To learn about his outstanding contributions to US-China educational exchange, the Renwen Society presents a special lecture by Prof. Cheng Henan of Teachers College, Columbia University on Paul Monroe and his Chinese Students.

During his 41-year tenure at Teachers College, Columbia University, Monroe explored a number of different teaching and administrative capacities, such as the establishment of the International Institute in 1923 that engendered conversations around international comparative education and development and shifted Teachers College to think globally about its student body and educational approach (Monroe, 1928b). Monroe’s interest in Chinese education stemmed from this sense of global inquiry and inclusivity; his interactions with Chinese students at Columbia and subsequent visits to China made Monroe an advocate for Chinese education and the collaboration between the U.S. and China.

However, Monroe’s legacy in China has often been overshadowed by another giant of his time, John Dewey. This lecture aims to re-examine published literature and primary sources and shed light on Monroe’s groundbreaking efforts to improve education in China through comprehensive collaboration with his prominent former Chinese students at Columbia University including Kuo Pingwen, Tao Xinzhi, Hu Shih, Chang Poling, Jiang Menglin.

Dr. Henan Cheng is the deputy director of the Center on Chinese Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. Dr. Cheng has extensive international and interdisciplinary experience and training. In addition to teaching and conducting research at various universities in China and the United States for 20 years, Dr. Cheng has also been actively involved in educational development work at a number of prestigious international organizations, including the UNESCO International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP), the Yale-China Association, and Boston-based Tibet Poverty Alleviation Fund.

美国著名教育家、哥伦比亚大学教育学院教授保罗·孟禄 (Paul Monroe, (1869–1947) 一生致力于国际教育和比较教育研究,培养了一批中国教育界未来的领袖,郭秉文、胡适、陶行知、陈鹤琴、蒋梦麟、张伯苓等都是他的得意学生。20世纪20年代和30年代孟禄多次前往中国进行广泛的实地考察、讲学和慈善工作,对中国现代教育体系的建立起到了关键的作用,也对世界教育产生了深远影响。

1926年,孟禄与杜威、郭秉文、胡适等哥大学人共同创办了华美协进社,并担任华美协进社首届董事会主席。孟禄在哥伦比亚大学教育学院任职长达41年(1899-1940),多年担任学校国际学院(International Institute)的院长。他在哥大期间开启了围绕国际比较教育和发展的对话,并使教育学院转向对学生群体和教育方法的全球性思考。孟禄对中国教育的兴趣源于这种全球探究和包容的意识。他在哥伦比亚大学与中国学生的互动以及随后对中国的访问,使孟禄成为中美教育交流合作的先行者。

为深入了解孟禄对中美教育交流的杰出贡献,华美人文学会特邀哥伦比亚大学教育学院中国教育中心执行主任程贺南教授于美东时间 2021 年 1 月 23 日(周六)晚 8 时至 9时半(北京时间24日上午 9 时至 10 时半)做《孟禄和他的中国学生》专题讲座。程教授将回顾孟禄与郭秉文、陶行知、胡适、张伯苓、蒋梦麟等杰出中国学生的全面合作,使大家认识孟禄为改善中国教育所做的开创性努力。

程贺南教授毕业于哥伦比亚大学教育学院,获教育博士学位。具有丰富的国际和跨学科的经历。除了在中美两地多所大学从事教学和研究工作20年外,程博士还积极参与多个著名国际组织的教育发展工作,包括联合国教科文组织国际教育规划研究所(IIEP)、雅礼协会和总部位于波士顿的西藏扶贫基金。
