Pieces of China: Episode 9: Patrick Chovanec on the loan that led to revolution

July 30 @ 12:00 pm - 12:15 pm

| Free

Pieces of China is an online series that tells the story of China, one object at a time.

What does a yellowing 1911 Hukuang Railway Bond—a foreign loan that sparked the revolution that toppled more than 1000 years of imperial rule—tell us about China today? Chinese economy expert Patrick Chovanec will talk about historic tensions between international trade and investment and economic nationalism that continue to impact U.S.-China relations today.

Patrick Chovanec is an economic advisor for Silvercrest Asset Management. He also teaches part-time as an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. Before Silvercrest he was an Associate Professor of Practice at Tsinghua University’s School of Economics and Management in Beijing, where he also served as Chairman of the Public Policy Development Committee for the American Chamber of Commerce in China.

Explore the full roster of guests in our Pieces of China series of free, online conversations.

This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department Of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
