Lao She (1899 – 1966) was one of the most significant figures of the 20th-century Chinese literature as a novelist and dramatist. He was best known for his novel Rickshaw Boy and the play Teahouse. To mark the 120th anniversary of his birth, the Renwen Society, in partnership with the Chinese Students and Scholars Association at Teachers College, Columbia University and the Princeton Chinese Theatre, presents Lao She’s Teahouse on March 23 and March 24 (four showings).
Teahouse is a play in three acts that mirrors old China in an ordinary Beijing teahouse and covers more than 50 years of change from 1898 to 1948. First staged in 1957, the play is a social and cultural commentary on the issues faced by China during the early twentieth century.
Teahouse as performed by a cast of 35 actors, who are all Princeton University students, is an innovative semi-immersive production, where the audience are able to not only watch the show in close proximity, but also have the opportunity to participate and immerse themselves in the hustle and bustle of Peking as the story unfolds.
重溫《茶館》- 紀念老舍先生誕辰120週年
今年是老舍先生誕辰120週年（1899-1966）。為紀念中國現代文學史上這位文豪巨匠，華美人文學會攜手普林斯頓中文劇社和哥倫比亞大學未來中國社，於2019年3月23日和24日在紐約上演四場老舍先生的經典劇目《茶館》。
《茶館》自1956年發表以後，多次被搬上全球各地舞台，並改編成電影、電視劇等多種藝術形式，被譽為中國話劇史上的瑰寶，對中國現代文學，藝術與社會產生深远影響。劇作展示了戊戌變法、軍閥混戰和新中國成立前夕三個時代近半個世紀的社會風雲變化。通過裕泰的茶館揭示了近半個世紀中國社會的黑暗腐敗、光怪陸離，以及在這個社會中的芸芸眾生。值此老舍先生誕辰120週年，我們將《茶館》以半浸沒劇形式搬上紐約舞台，致敬大師，重溫經典，邀您共赴一場舊時代舊社會的葬禮，吟一曲老北平可憐人的輓歌。
《茶館》作為半浸沒式戲劇，將擺脫傳統“演員在台上、觀眾坐檯下”的觀演方式，也同時跳脫浸沒式的框架，將浸沒式戲劇本身的形式作為藝術表現的手法，徘徊於傳統與浸沒創新之間，營造融合與疏離之感。觀眾可在舞台上的開放位置，近距離觀看《茶館》，甚至部分座位的觀眾還有機會參與其中。
《普林斯頓中文劇社(Princeton Chinese Theatre) 創立於2008年，是全美第一家由學生創辦的大學中文劇社。劇社致力於通過表演中文話劇的形式, 在校內外推廣中國文化。劇社的導演隊伍包含普林斯頓的學生和中國教師，而演員隊伍則更是涵蓋各年級、國家、專業的普林學生，甚至曾有外校同學加盟。每個春季和秋季，劇社均會推出一部新的作品，與普林內外所有熱愛中文，熱愛戲劇的人傾情相約，共享時光。
