Qin and Tonic is China Institute’s exclusive member networking and social event taking place every last Thursday of the month. In January, Qin and Tonic transforms to Beats and Brews as we welcome Chinese-American rap sensation Bohan Phoenix! Attendees will be treated to light snacks and refreshments alongside a pop-up Q&A session with Phoenix. Come with questions!
Bohan Phoenix was born in China’s Hubei province and immigrated to the U.S. at 11, unable to speak a word of English. He fell in love with hip hop and learned the language quickly by rapping along to anything he could get his hands on. Today Bohan is a rising figure in both the American and Chinese music scenes; his use of both Mandarin and English lyrics reflects his dual identity and aims to bridge the gap between the two cultures he calls home. Amidst a nationwide ban on “hip hop culture” in China and an environment where few indie artists thrive, Bohan is redefining what it means to be independent on his own terms.
