Hailing from Fenghuang County in southwestern Hunan Province, Shen Congwen was one of the most influential and widely-known authors of the 20th century in China. He was famed for his refined literary voice, his deep understanding of, and sympathy for his home province of Hunan, as well as his passion for the simple art of telling a story. As one of the representatives of the modern Chinese canon, his works have been published in translation across the globe. According to Göran Malmqvist, a renowned Swedish sinologist and a member of the Swedish Academy, and Kjell Espmark, another renowned member of the Swedish Academy and Chair of the Nobel Committee for Literature in 1988, Shen Congwen would have been a strong contender and possible winner of the Nobel prize but for his untimely death in May of that year.
On the occasion of the 120th anniversary of Shen Congwen’s birth, the Renwen Society presents a lecture on December 17 on the literary legend by Mr. Shao Huaqiang, a scholar on Shen Congwen, with whom he had extensive contact and exchanges. Mr. Shao will discuss Shen Congwen’s life and extraordinary literary achievements.
Once a lecturer at Shanghai Normal University, Mr. Shao Huaqiang came to the U.S. in the 1980s to study literature at Washington University in St. Louis. He has published extensively on Shen Congwen and other modern Chinese writers. In 1980, he and a colleague of his were entrusted by Shen Congwen to compile a 12-volume collection of Shen Congwen’s writings, the most comprehensive anthology published during Shen Congwen’s lifetime.
沈从文，湖南凤凰县人，中国著名作家、历史文物研究家、京派小说代表人物。14岁时，他投身行伍，浪迹湘川黔边境地区，1924年开始文学创作，撰写出版了《八骏图》《边城》《看虹摘星录》《长河》等小说。1929年，经徐志摩推荐，小学尚未毕业的沈从文被吴淞中国公学校长破格聘为该校讲师。翌年转任教于武汉大学。1931至1933年间，任教于山东青岛大学。1933年秋，开始主持天津《大公报·文艺》，并成为了京派文学领袖。抗战爆发后，他被聘为西南联大教授。1946年回到北平，任北京大学教授，同时兼任京津几大报刊文艺副刊主编。1949年，离开北京大学，就职于中国历史博物馆，开始了专职文物研究生涯。文革后，转至中国社会科学院历史研究所，主要从事中国古代服饰研究。
哥伦比亚大学已故教授夏志清在他的《中国现代小说史》第八章里专门讨论了沈从文，给予极高的评价。1980年11月7日，沈从文应邀访问美国，在哥伦比亚大学演讲《二十年代的中国新文学》。校园内贴出的海报尊称沈从文是“中国当代最伟大的在世作家”。这场演讲中，夏志清亲自担任主持人。瑞典汉学家、诺贝尔文学奖资深评委马悦然亦认为沈从文是现代中国最优秀的作家之一，他不止一次说过：“如果沈从文1988年没有去世，他肯定获诺贝尔文学奖。” 1988年担任诺贝尔文学奖评委会主席的埃斯普马克(Kjell Espmark)于2017年亦披露，沈从文当年已被选为文学奖的候选人。
值沈从文先生诞辰120周年之际，华美人文学会特邀沈从文研究者邵华强先生于美东时间12月17日晚8时至9时半（北京时间12月18日上午9时至10时半）做《不可复制的天才作家》专题讲座。邵先生将追忆他与沈从文先生的交往，探索沈从文的不平凡的一生和文学贡献。

邵华强先生，1980年代留学美国前为上海师范大学讲师。留美前，曾主持并完成了中国社会科学院文学研究所主持，属国家“六五”哲学社会科学重点项目的“中国现代文学史研究资料丛书”中的《沈从文研究资料》，和《徐志摩研究资料》；并与虞建华合作，系统地翻译了80年代前海外“沈从文热”中的主要研究著述，包括著名的金介甫哈佛大学的博士论文《沈从文笔下的中国社会与文化》。1980年，由沈从文先生推荐，与凌宇一起主持完成了十二卷本《沈从文文集》，这套文集也是沈从文生前唯一的一次对自己创作的系统整理。
