The Six Dynasties takes its name from the six ruling dynasties of the Eastern Wu (222–280), Jin (265–420), Song (420–479), Qi (479–502), Liang (502–557), and Chen (557–589), all with their capitals in Nanjing. It was an important and glorious period in Chinese history, when arts, literature and philosophical ideas flourished. During the Six Dynasties, Nanjing emerged as the first city in the world with a population exceeding one million. With the ancient city of Rome, Nanjing is often referred to as one of the two centers of the classical civilization of the world.

Designed by Mr. Chien Chung Pei, son of the legendary architect I.M. Pei, Co-founder of Pei Architects and Co-Chair of the Board of Trustees of China Institute, The Oriental Metropolitan Museum was completed on the ruins of the former Six Dynasties and opened to the public in 2014 in Nanjing. It is China’s most comprehensive ruins-site museum that displays numerous cultural relics of the Six Dynasties.

To help understand the Six Dynasties period and this unique museum, the Renwen Society presents a lecture on the topic by Prof. Hu Axiang, President of The Oriental Metropolitan Museum on February 6, 2021, 8:00-9:00 pm (EST). Prof. Hu is a renowned historian and also on faculty in the School of History at Nanjing University. He has given numerous lectures on Six Dynasties and related topics both in China and abroad and published many books on Chinese history.

Mr. Chien Chung Pei will also address the lecture, a rare opportunity not to be missed.

坐落于南京长江路的六朝博物馆（The Oriental Metropolitan Museum,The 3rd-6th century），由世界著名建筑大师贝聿铭之子、纽约华美协进社董事会会长贝建中先生领衔的贝氏资深设计团队担纲设计，体系化地将贝氏建筑模数、贝式建筑几何、贝氏建筑光影运用于此，于2014年8月11日正式对外开放。作为中国目前展示六朝文物最全面的遗址博物馆、反映六朝文化最系统的专题博物馆，六朝博物馆既在学界深孚众望，也成为今日南京的璀璨地标。

对话中国历史，理解华夏文化，亲近古都南京，感悟“文学之都”，六朝都可谓关键的一环。华美人文学会特邀六朝博物馆馆长胡阿祥教授于美东时间2月6日晚8时至9时半（北京时间2月7日上午9时至10时半）做《六朝如梦：六朝古都与六朝博物馆》专题讲座。华美协进社董事长、六朝博物馆设计师、著名建筑师贝聿铭之子贝建中先生也将致辞。

主讲人胡阿祥，南京大学历史学院教授、六朝研究所所长，六朝博物馆馆长，甘肃省“飞天学者”。中国魏晋南北朝史学会荣誉副会长，江苏省六朝史研究会名誉会长。中国中央电视台“百家讲坛”主讲人、“中国地名大会”点评嘉宾，喜马拉雅FM“中国通史大师课”、“中国大智慧”主讲人，书香江苏形象大使。出版与主编著作70多种，发表论文与随笔500余篇。主要代表著作有《六朝疆域与政区》、《兵家必争之地——中国历史军事地理要览》、《中国地理大发现》（大陆简体字版，台湾繁体字版，韩文版）、《中古文学地理研究》、《国学四十讲》、《吾国与吾名——中国历代国号与古今名称研究》、《南京古旧地图集》等。
