Stories of the Four Treasures of the Chinese Study

August 27, 2022 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Known as the four treasures of the Chinese study (wenfang sibao), the brush, ink, paper and inkstone have been the indispensable tools of trade for Chinese calligraphers, painters and poets for thousands of years. With their unique features, these four stationery tools have guided, and to a large extent, determined the style and the spirit of Chinese calligraphy and paintings, which are the most valued visual art form held in great esteem in China.

To understand how these four treasures of the Chinese study came to occupy such an unmatched stature in Chinese culture, the Renwen Society presents a lecture by Mr. Chen Lvsheng, a renowned calligrapher and painter, on August 23 on the subject. Mr. Chen will shed light on, and tell stories about each of these four treasured items with their history, material properties, manufacturing technology and regional characteristics. He will also point out the value of the four treasures as collectors’ items.

A graduate from the prestigious Nanjing Institute of Art, Mr. Chen served as the Vice President of the National Museum of China in Beijing from 2011 to 2016. He is currently the curator of the museum of the University of Science and Technology of China, the president of the Society of Han-Dynasty Paintings, and a guest professor at many universities, including Nanjing Art Institute, Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, the City University of Macau and Taiwan Normal University. As a culmination of his distinguished career in art, Mr. Chen now presides over 7 museums under his name across China: The Chen Lvsheng Art Museum in Changzhou, Sanya, Yangzhong and Hefei, the Oil Lamp Museum in Yangzhong and Changzhou, the Han Culture Museum and the Bamboo Museum, both in Yangzhong.
