Sweet Sounds: The Extraordinary Life of Rulan Chao Pian

A renowned professor, scholar, and ethnomusicologist, Rulan Chao (later Rulan Chao Pian) was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where at the time her father, the eminent linguist and composer Yuen Ren Chao, was a professor at Harvard. She spent most of her childhood in various cities in China as well as in Paris, returning to the U.S. at age 16. Pian started teaching Chinese at Harvard in 1947, providing language foundation for the early generation of American Sinologists. She received a Ph.D. from the university in 1960 with a dissertation on Song Dynasty Music, and, in 1974, was named tenured Professor in East Asian Languages and in Music, one of the first women to attain the professorial rank and the very first Chinese American woman professor at Harvard.

To mark the centennial anniversary of the birth of Prof. Rulan Chao Pian, the Renwen Society presents a lecture on July 30 by Dr. Bell Yung, Professor Emeritus of Music of the University of Pittsburgh and a former student of Prof. Rulan Chao Pian at Harvard. Dr. Yung will relate his mentor’s extraordinary life and work as well as their personal friendship.

Dr. Bell Yung’s family is from Wuxi, a city close to Changzhou, Rulan Chao Pian’s ancestral hometown in Jiangsu Province. He grew up in Hong Kong and went to the U.S. for higher education in 1960, leading to a Ph.D. in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and one in Music from Harvard University. As an ethnomusicologist specializing in China, he had taught at the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Washington, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University, University of California at Davis, and Cornell University. He has published ten books and over 100 journal articles, book chapters and reviews, in English and in Chinese, on various topics including the instrument guqin, Cantonese Opera, Cantonese Narrative Song, Ritual music, and cultural rights. His most recent book is the Chinese edition of his The Last of China’s Literati: The Music, Poetry, and Life of Tsar Teh-yun (Hong Kong: Joint Publishing, 2022).

今年是著名民族音乐学家赵如兰教授诞辰100周年。赵如兰一生与哈佛结下不解之缘。她1922年4月20日出生在哈佛大学所在的麻省剑桥,其时父亲赵元任博士正在哈佛任教。25岁(1947年)起在哈佛大学东亚系教授中文,给早期多位著名美国汉学家打好了语言基础。1960年以研究宋代音乐获哈佛大学博士学位,1962年开始在音乐系兼任课程,并于1974年被任命为哈佛大学东亚系与音乐系终身教授,成为哈佛首位华裔女教授。2013年11月30日,赵如兰教授于出生地剑桥的家中安详逝世,享年91岁。

赵如兰教授诞辰100周年之际,华美人文学会特邀匹兹堡大学音乐系荣休教授、赵如兰教授的得意弟子荣鸿曾 (Bell Yung) 博士于美东时间7月30日晚8时至9时半(北京时间7月31日上午8时至9时半做“芳音如兰—赵如兰的精彩一生”专题讲座,讲述老师不凡的人生故事和教研成就。

荣鸿曾教授原藉无锡,1941年出生于上海,在香港长大,毕业于九龙华仁书院。1960年赴美国,先后获得加州大学工程物理学士,麻省理工学院物理博士,及哈佛大学音乐博士。2012年获颁授香港中文大学荣誉博士。

荣鸿曾教授的专业为民族音乐学及中国传统音乐,曾任教于香港中文大学、香港大学、加州大学、康乃尔大学,现为匹兹堡大学音乐系荣休教授,及华盛顿大学音乐系兼任教授。荣氏曾获多项研究基金,包括美国的古根海姆、福特、梅伦、国家人文基金、蒋经国基金会等,及香港的研资局、艺展局、群芳、北山堂等。荣氏著、编、译十本专著、文章约一百篇、博物馆展品目录两本。另录制雷射唱片和雷射影碟。內容包括古琴、粵剧、广东南音、木鱼、仪礼音乐、文化权、传统音乐创作等。最近的出版包括《中国最后一代文人:蔡德允的琴、诗、书与人生》(香港三联书店,2022)。
