Tao Xingzhi: A Foremost Exponent of Modern Education in China and a Teacher of Teachers

October 18 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Born on October 18, 1891 into a peasant family in Anwei province of China, Tao Xingzhi received his undergraduate education at Jinling University in Nanjing before pursuing graduate studies in the U.S., first at the University of Illinois (1914-15) and then at Teachers College, Columbia University (1916-17). Upon his untimely death in 1946, John Dewey and William Kilpatrick of Columbia University remarked: “We honor Dr. Tao for his unsurpassed and heroic devotion in behalf of a better education for the common people of China.”

To mark the 130th anniversary of Tao Xingzhi’s birth, the Renwen Society at China Institute and the Center on Chinese Education at Teachers College, Columbia University jointly present a commemorative lecture on Oct. 18, the date of Tao Xingzhi’s birth, on the foremost pioneer by Dr. Chu Zhaohui, author of a biography of Tao Xingzhi. Dr. Chu will discuss Tao Xingzhi’s glorious life and distinguished career in promoting educational reforms, mass education, and democracy in China.

The speaker Chu Zhaohui received an MA in educational management from Nanjing Normal University and a Ph.D. in the educational history of China from Beijing Normal University. He is currently a senior researcher with the National Institute of Education Sciences in Beijing and a prolific author of many books and articles on education, including two books on Tao Xingzhi.

Dr. Cheng Henan, Executive Director of the Center on Chinese Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, will also speak at the lecture, reminiscing Tao Xingzhi’s days at Columbia more than a century ago.
