DCTA Chinese New Year Program
January 6 — March 31, 2020

Chinese New Year, or the Spring Festival, is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. Often called the Lunar New Year,it begins on the first day of the first month in the Chinese calendar and goes to the 15thday. During this time, windows and doors will be decorated with red paper-cuts and couplets with popular themes of happiness, wealth, and longevity. People celebrate New Year’s Eve with their families by indulging in a big dinner feast. The night is punctuated with firecrackers. Chinese New Year is a time to reconcile, forget all grudges, and sincerely wish peace and happiness for everyone.

To prepare to celebrate this important yearly event, our DCTA Chinese New Year Program will include a 30 minute video of Spring Festival and an one-hour calligraphy workshop. After learning a few basic Chinese characters such as “Spring” and “Good Fortune”, students will learn basic calligraphy brushstrokes to turn the characters into festive and beautiful New Year decorations on red paper!
