Art of the Mountain’s second Curator’s Lecture was conducted by renowned photography critic, Jiang Rong (江融), Guest Curator of the exhibition, member of the United Nations Exhibitions Committee, and columnist in Photo World magazine. Jiang’s lecture focused on the elements of the exhibition’s third section: New Landscape Photography.

In conjunction with China Institute Gallery’s exhibition opening, Guest Curator Jerome Silbergeld, P. Y and Kinmay W. Tang professor Chinese art history, Emeritus, led a discussion on traditional Chinese landscape aesthetics and geography and how both are incorporated into Art of the Mountain: Through the Chinese Photographer’s Lens.

Li Yinde (李银德), Director Emeritus of the Xuzhou Museum, a renowned archaeologist, shared his unique personal experiences excavating the Chu King’s Mausoleum in Shizhshan (Lion Mountain) and interpreted Chu works of art.
Reading Paintings – The Intricacies and Essence of Chinese Painting

In this special lecture, Ms. Hu Yanyan, President of China Guardian Auctions, the premier auction house that specializes in Chinese antiques and art, and a senior specialist in Chinese calligraphy and painting, examined Chinese masterworks from ancient, modern, and contemporary periods, to discuss the forms and brushwork of Chinese painting.

The Seven Sages have been a recurring theme in Chinese art since the Six Dynasties period and they have continued to inspire artists for generations. In her lecture “Why the Seven Sages?” Willow Weilan Hai, Director of China Institute Gallery, Chief Curator of Art in a Time of Chaos: Masterworks from Six Dynasties China, 3rd-6th Centuries explored archaeological findings among other artworks through the dynasties and decipher the significance of the Seven Sages as cultural symbols in Chinese art.
