2017 Blue Cloud Gala (青云慈善晚宴及颁奖庆典)
Cultural and business leaders from around the globe gathered in New York City for the China Institute’s annual Blue Cloud Gala on Thursday, November 2, 2017. Celebrating China Institute’s 91st anniversary, the Gala honored five individuals for their commitment to advancing understanding and deepening trust between China and the United States. China Institute is committed to building bridges between the United States and China through programming in education, culture, business, and art.
Receiving the Blue Cloud Award were the Hon. Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor, New York State; Ronald O. Perelman, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of MacAndrews & Forbes Incorporated; Vera Wang, Designer; Ning Yuan, Chairman and President of China Construction America (CCA); and Robert Hong Xiao, Vice Chairman of Perfect World Investment & Holding Group and CEO of Perfect World Co., Ltd.
Held at Cipriani, 25 Broadway, the event was attended by over 300 guests and co-emceed by Yue-Sai Kan and Mei He, Gala Co-chairs. Notable attendees included Chinese Ambassador Zhang Qiyue, New York State Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul; New York State Assembly member Yuh-Line Niou, fashion magnate Silas Chou, artist Cai Guoqiang, Nautica founder David Chu, cultural impresario Shirley Young, fashion icon Carmen Dell’Orefice, designer Derek Lam, Nicole Phelps, Ray Bouderau, Anna Hu, Luciano Berti, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, Chu Wong, Xu Chen, Peter Reisman, Melissa Lawrence Apfelbaum, Angela Chen, Scott Pattison, Matt Rich, Veronique Gabai-Pinsky, and Gary Barnett.
The evening began with a cocktail reception, followed by dinner and a silent and live auction. Highlights included a performance by celebrated Tibetan performers, Snow Lotus Trio.

Ronald O. Perelman (罗纳德·佩雷尔曼)
is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of MacAndrews & Forbes Incorporated (麦克安德鲁斯&福布斯 董事长兼首席执行官), a company with interests in a diversified portfolio of public and private companies. MacAndrews & Forbes’ businesses span a wide range of industries, from global leaders in cosmetics and digital entertainment to biotechnology and military equipment. Over the past four decades, Mr. Perelman has become known as an accomplished industrialist and generous philanthropist. He is recognized as an innovative leader and a major supporter of many of the United States’ most prominent cultural, educational and medical institutions.
Vera Wang (王薇薇)
has created a unique aspirational world that alludes to sensuality and youthful sophistication. Exquisite details, intricate draping and a nonchalant sense of style characterize the Vera Wang aesthetic. Vera Wang, a native New Yorker, understands women who embrace fashion. By age 23, Vera was the youngest ever Vogue fashion editor and stylist where she remained for 16 years before moving to Ralph Lauren as a design director. In 1990, Vera Wang opened her first flagship store on Manhattan’s famed Madison Avenue, introducing fashion to the bridal industry with revolutionary designs and refined detailing. Since then she has expanded her collections to include ready-to-wear, footwear, eyewear, fragrance, flowers, china and crystal, silver and gifts, bedding, fine papers and her first book, Vera Wang On Weddings.
Ning Yuan (袁宁),
Chairman and President of China Construction America (CCA), (中建美国 董事长兼总裁) CSCEC’s largest overseas subsidiary, is a veteran in international construction and investment. Under his leadership, CCA has successfully transformed from a small local contractor to a respected multinational company in the Americas. With more than 98% of its employees hired locally, CCA has maintained an average annual growth rate of over 40% in the past decade. Served as the 3rd and 4th chairman of China General Chamber of Commerce – USA (CGCC), Mr. Yuan is an adamant supporter of a healthy and comprehensive China-US relationship, making significant contributions to bilateral economic exchanges.
Robert Hong Xiao (萧泓)
is now vice chairman of Perfect World Investment & Holding Group and CEO of Perfect World Co., Ltd. Under his leadership, Perfect World has become the largest movie and game conglomerate ever in China and an example of cross-culture exchange for cultural and creative enterprises. In the film and TV industry, Perfect World Pictures filmed many award-winning movies, and produces around 500 episodes of TV series every year which accounts for over 10% of prime time TV in China. For game sector, Perfect World Games has exported its products to more than 100 countries and regions and has set up more than 20 wholly-owned subsidiaries in North America, Europe and Asia to operate its games.
Dr. Xiao also served as vice chairman of the B20 China Business Council, director of the board of the APEC China Business Council, and director of the board of the National Committee of United States-China Relations. Given his contributions, Dr. Xiao was invited to the second plenary meeting of the third session of the 12th CPPCC National Committee in 2015.
