This course is designed for Chinese learners at a high intermediate level or beyond as well as native speakers of Chinese who are interested in studying Chinese poetry in its original language. In this ten-week course, students will study selected masterpieces of modern Chinese poetry (since 1919). Through understanding and appreciation of the poetic Chinese language, students will be exposed to its rhetoric, lexicon, and unique linguistic imagery. Students will be immersed in the richness of Chinese vocabulary and classical phrases in great depth and detail. Recitation is also a part of the curriculum by which students work on improving their pronunciation, tones, and intonations. Students will experience and realize the musical aspect of the Chinese language, as manifested in its poetic rhythm and unique rhyming formations.

As with all literary compositions, this collection of poetry will reflect the particular period of time in Chinese history, emphasizing its people and cultural aspects when these masterpieces were composed.

Composing, reciting, and studying poems has been a popular tradition of Chinese people since ancient times, seeing great poets creating great poems in different eras, and in a wide variety of styles and themes.

In this course, the instructor, Ms. Xiaoling Dong, will present some of the most well-known poems by some of the most influential poets in modern Chinese literature, such as Xu Zhimo (徐志摩), Dai Wangshu (戴望舒), Aiqin (艾青), Yu Guangzhong (余光中), and Gu Cheng (顾城). These masterpieces will provide a comprehensive picture of modern China as portrayed in themes of love, nostalgia, homeland, philosophy, and self-awareness.

正如我轻轻的来;

是夕阳中的新娘;

油油的在水底招摇;

不是清泉,是天上虹;

向青草更青处漫溯;

悄悄是别离的笙箫;

正如我悄悄的来;

Saying Good-bye to Cambridge Again

By Xu Zhimo

Very quietly I take my leave
As quietly as I came here;
Quietly I wave good-bye
To the rosy clouds in the western sky.

The golden willows by the riverside
Are young brides in the setting sun;
Their reflections on the shimmering waves
Always linger in the depth of my heart.

The floating heart growing in the sludge
Sways leisurely under the water;
In the gentle waves of Cambridge
I would be a water plant!

That pool under the shade of elm trees
Holds not water but the rainbow from the sky;
Shattered to pieces among the duckweeds
Is the sediment of a rainbow-like dream?

To seek a dream? Just to pole a boat upstream
To where the green grass is more verdant;
Or to have the boat fully loaded with starlight
And sing aloud in the splendor of starlight.

But I cannot sing aloud
Quietness is my farewell music;
Even summer insects heap silence for me
Silent is Cambridge tonight!

Very quietly I take my leave
As quietly as I came here;
Gently I flick my sleeves
Not even a wisp of cloud will I bring away
