Summer Intensive Program

The Confucius Institute at China Institute ([email protected]) and the various programs it offers are made possible through the generous support of the Confucius Institute Headquarters – with additional support from other private and public foundations.
This three-week summer program, organized by Confucius Institute at China Institute ([email protected]), a partnership between China Institute and East China Normal University (ECNU) in Shanghai, provides scholarships for in-service Chinese language teachers to take intensive courses taught by distinguished professors who are leading scholars in their respective fields. This program is designed to help those non-native Chinese speakers who teach Chinese in K-12 schools in the U.S. with the following main objectives:
• Advance non-native Chinese speakers’ Mandarin Chinese language and cultural proficiency;
• Improve participants’ ability to teach Chinese with authentic materials and deeper understanding of Chinese language and culture;
• Connect the teacher participants with resources in China.
The program is composed of course hours, field trips, school visits and presentation time. In the first week, the participants will focus on understanding the formation and structure of Chinese characters and developing the skills to teach characters. The second week will focus on the authentic materials of contemporary China through media reports and videos. During the final week, participants will travel to Quzhou in Zhejiang Province to further explore the Confucian traditions and the folk culture in China.
Upon completing the program, participants will earn 100 hours of professional development credits.
The Program Offers:
• Intensive course work, authentic material collections and opportunities for exchange with local Chinese teachers;
• Chinese Cultural Immersion Excursions;
• A Certificate of Participation issued by ECNU and may be used for Professional Development credits in U.S. schools;
• Tuition and Accommodation remission
