Chinese for Children 2018 Spring Registration is now open!

NYIG

Spring 2018 Classes begin the week of February 2nd, 2018. China Institute is excited to collaborate with the New York Institute of GO offer Chinese Go classes during our Spring 2018 semester.

Go is an international game of the mind. It has very simple rules: players take turns to place black or white stones on a board, trying to capture the opponent’s stones or surround empty space to make points of territory. It is also a game of profound complexity, requiring a unique integration and working of analytic (left brain) and artistic (right brain) mental abilities at the same time.

Originated in China more than four thousand years ago, Go (围棋Wéiqí), like Zither playing, Calligraphy, and Painting, is one of the four supreme artistic genres in Chinese culture. It is believed that a strong Go skill is an indication of great wisdom. As the oldest game still played in its original form, Go today is popular among men and women internationally at all ages.

In the first 12 – session course, basic knowledge and rules of Go will be introduced, along with basic techniques and strategies. History and development of Go, historical characters will be introduced as well. After the course, the students will be able to understand the basic rules, and they will have all the knowledge they need to move into the novice level. They will also be able to accomplish a level of 26 kyu and proceed to the higher double digit kyu levels. All of the students will be able to start the novice level from 25 kyu to 11 kyu in Go.

Enrollment is limited and offered on a rolling basis. We need a minimum of 4 students to open the class, and there will be a maximum of 8 students in each class.
