Chinese for Children 2019 Fall Registration is now open! Fall 2019 Classes begin the week of September 16. We are accepting new and returning students ages 2-17 for the Fall semester at all proficiency levels!

Sibling and Member Discounts! Siblings of students are eligible for a 5% discount, as well as 5% off for China Institute Family Memberships. Plus, receive an extra 5% discount when registering for the entire year (both Fall and Spring semesters)!

Our program offers language classes at all proficiency levels for toddlers, children and teens ages 2-17. Students will learn Mandarin Chinese language and culture through songs, stories, games, and art projects in a student-centered classroom environment. Classes are taught by our team of native speakers who are professional, experienced language teachers. Cultural elements are woven into the curriculum to introduce and inspire a lifetime of artistic engagement and understanding.

Chinese for Children & Youth After-school Classes provide a roadmap for students to achieve language proficiency in accordance with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Standards and Proficiency Guidelines.

Classes follow the academic school-year from September to June. Each year consists of 32 weeks (16 weeks per semester). Snacks are included.

Mandarin Munchkins

This immersive Mandarin class is designed for both parents/caregivers and their children. Participants explore childhood themes, learn basic phrases, and gain practical conversational skills through music and movement. Activities foster children’s development of fine motor skills, build self-confidence, and prepare children to participate in group activities and properly interact with others. Our experienced teachers are native Mandarin speakers with extensive training in early childhood education.

A typical Munchkin class:
6 mins: free play with hands-on activities followed by gathering
8 mins: story time in Mandarin Chinese
8 mins: game time
8 mins: music and songs
10 mins: art project
5 mins: Movement time and wrap-up

No prior Mandarin skills are required for this class.

Come learn Mandarin and enjoy bonding time with your kid(s)! Designed for parents (or caregivers) and their children, this immersive language class will teach early childhood themes, basic phrases, and practical conversational skills through music and movement. Our experienced teachers are native Mandarin speakers with extensive training in early childhood education. No prior Mandarin knowledge is required for this class.

Each semester consists of 16 weeks. Snacks are included.

Small-sized classes follow theme-based curriculum using a dynamic, interactive approach. The curriculum is designed to develop and reinforce language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing as it relates to everyday life.

Student Goal: By the end of Prep 2, students will be able to read and understand main points in simple texts that contain familiar vocabulary, exchange information about familiar tasks, topics and activities, engage in brief social interactions, and to write simple descriptions, messages, and information on familiar topics.

Focus is placed on writing skills while continuing to advance students’ conversational competence. Classes meet for 3 hours a week, allowing for intensive study in an immersive Chinese language environment. With a dynamic, interactive, and student-centered approach, our small-sized classes are guided by a theme-based curriculum where students learn characters based on frequency of use and complexity.

In addition to building students’ conversational skills through a variety of age-appropriate topics, this Intensive Literacy class builds a solid foundation for literacy, leading to a high level proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing, in addition to a more thorough understanding of Chinese culture.

Student Goal: At the end of Intensive Literacy 1, students will be able to read age-appropriate stories independently and write paragraphs and short essays in Chinese.

Class starts Sunday September 22, 2019

Starting from the basics, this course is designed to develop and reinforce language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing as it relates to everyday life situations. The objectives include:

  • master the Chinese phonetic system (pinyin and tones) with satisfactory pronunciation;
  • understand the construction of commonly used simplified Chinese Characters and learn to write them correctly;
  • understand and use basic Chinese grammar and sentence structures; build up essential vocabulary;
  • read and write level appropriate passages; and
  • become acquainted with aspects of Chinese culture and society related to course materials.

Designed to consolidate the student’s overall aural-oral proficiency, this course also introduces the written aspect of Chinese. Core objectives are:

  • to be able to obtain information from extended conversation;
  • to express feelings and opinions on common topics;
  • to discuss personal experience;
  • to expand vocabulary and decipher meaning of compound words;
  • to develop reading comprehension; to write in medium length personal narratives; and
  • to continue being acquainted with aspects of Chinese culture and society related to course materials.

Designed to further develop proficiency in speaking and writing through readings, this course focuses on improving reading comprehension and writing skills. The objectives are:

  • to further improve oral communicative competence;
  • to acquire vocabulary and patterns necessary for discussion;
  • to increase reading speed of texts with more advanced syntax;
  • to learn to make context-based guesses about the meaning of a new word; and
  • to write and present more fully developed narratives or reasoned and structured arguments in length.

For students with fluency or near-fluency in conversational Mandarin Chinese, STEAM + Mandarin provides a fun, experiential learning opportunity on STEAM topics taught in Mandarin for children ages 7-9.

With hands-on activities, students explore STEAM concepts through an interactive approach, building language skills and expressing ideas about STEAM in Mandarin Chinese. Scientific and artistic inventions and discoveries in China, such as papermaking and navigation, are also integrated into the curriculum.

Join this class to have fun with STEAM topics, deepen your child’s understanding of Chinese culture, and reinforce their Mandarin Chinese!
