Chinese for Children 2019 Fall Registration is now open! Fall 2019 Classes begin the week of September 16. We are accepting new and returning students ages 2-17 for the Fall semester at all proficiency levels!

Early bird discount! Sign up before August 20 to get the $50 registration fee waived.

Sibling and Member Discounts! Siblings of students are eligible for a 5% discount, as well as 5% off for China Institute Family Memberships. Plus, receive an extra 5% discount when registering for the entire year (both Fall and Spring semesters)!

Our program offers language classes at all proficiency levels for toddlers, children and teens ages 2-17. Students will learn Mandarin Chinese language and culture through songs, stories, games, and art projects in a student-centered classroom environment. Classes are taught by our team of native speakers who are professional, experienced language teachers. Cultural elements are woven into the curriculum to introduce and inspire a lifetime of artistic engagement and understanding.

Chinese for Children & Youth After-school Classes provide a roadmap for students to achieve language proficiency in accordance with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Standards and Proficiency Guidelines.

Classes follow the academic school-year from September to June. Each year consists of 32 weeks (16 weeks per semester). Snacks are included.

Chinese for Toddlers ages 2 to 3 features classes taught using theme-based curriculum, where students are fully immersed in Chinese language through songs, games and interactive activities. Toddlers will develop basic understanding, communication and social skills by the end of the course.

Classes start September 17 and 20, 2019

Classes are divided into small groups according to students’ language levels and learning backgrounds. Using a theme-based curriculum, students will participate in engaging and interactive learning experience through a variety of age-appropriate activities, games, songs, etc. In addition to listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, students will also develop social skills and strengthen their study habits.

Small-sized classes follow theme-based curriculum using a dynamic, interactive approach. The curriculum is designed to develop and reinforce language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing as it relates to everyday life.

Student Goal: By the end of Prep 2, students will be able to read and understand main points in simple texts that contain familiar vocabulary, exchange information about familiar tasks, topics and activities, engage in brief social interactions, and to write simple descriptions, messages, and information on familiar topics.

Intensive Literacy 1: For kids ages 4 to 7

Focus is placed on writing skills, while continuing to advance students’ conversational competence.  Classes meet for 3 hours a week, allowing for intensive study in an immersive Chinese language environment. With a dynamic, interactive, and student-centered approach, our small-sized classes are guided by a theme-based curriculum where students learn characters based on frequency of use and complexity. In addition to building students’ conversational skills through a variety of age-appropriate topics, this Intensive Literacy class builds a solid foundation for literacy, leading to a high level proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing, in addition to a more thorough understanding of Chinese culture. At the end of Intensive Literacy 3, students will be able to read age-appropriate stories independently and write paragraphs and short essays in Chinese.

For students with fluency or near fluency in conversational Mandarin Chinese, this class will focus on reading and writing skills, while continuing to advance their conversational competence. Students engage in intensive study, immersed in a Chinese language environment for 3 hours a week. With a dynamic, interactive, student-centered approach, our small-sized classes are guided by a theme-based curriculum where students learn characters based on frequency of use and complexity. In addition to building students’ conversational skills in a variety of age-appropriate topics, the Intensive Literacy class builds a solid foundation for literacy, leading to a high level proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing, as well as an in-depth understanding of Chinese culture. At the end of Intensive Literacy 2, students will be able to read age-appropriate stories independently and write paragraphs and short stories in Chinese.

Starting from the basics, this course is designed to develop and reinforce language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing as it relates to everyday life situations. The objectives include: master the Chinese phonetic system (pinyin and tones) with satisfactory pronunciation; understand the construction of commonly used simplified Chinese Characters and learn to write them correctly; understand and use basic Chinese grammar and sentence structures; build up essential vocabulary; read and write level appropriate passages; become acquainted with aspects of Chinese culture and society related to course materials.

Designed to further develop proficiency in speaking and writing through readings, this course focuses on improving reading comprehension and writing skills. Course objectives include: attain advanced oral communication and competence; acquire vocabulary and sentence structures necessary for every-day discussion; increase reading speed of texts with more advanced syntax; learn to make context-based conjectures about the meaning of new words; compose more fully developed narratives and essays.
