40 Rector Street, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10006

Speakers: Ms. Liu Chan, Mr. Chen Lusheng, Ms. Zhang Anna
Event fee: FREE
Location: 40 Rector Street, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10006

Liu Haisu was a prominent twentieth-century Chinese painter and a noted art educator. He excelled at combining traditional Chinese painting methods with European techniques, especially those of van Gogh and Cézanne, and promoted this style as a model for revolutionizing art education in China. As the leader of art schools in Shanghai and Nanjing, Liu exerted extraordinary influence. The scion of a distinguished literary family, Liu studied calligraphy under Kang Youwei and traditional landscape and flower painting under Wu Changshi and Chen Hengke. He became one of the founders of the Shanghai Academy, the first art college in modern China. During the 1920s and ’30s he organized several important national and international exhibitions and toured Japan and Europe, where he studied Western techniques and exhibited his own works. As a teacher, Liu maintained that painters should combine a knowledge of formal art theory with their natural talent and personal judgment, a departure from the Chinese tradition of copying the compositions and techniques of old masters. His works in traditional Chinese style were free-flowing and brilliant in color.

To commemorate the 120th anniversary of his birth, The Renwen Society presents a special lecture on the art legend on Sunday, December 4, 2-4 pm. Speakers include:
Ms. Liu Chan, daughter of Liu Haisu, Guest Professor at Nanjing University of the Arts, Honorary President of the Liu Haisu Gallery in Changzhou
Mr. Chen Lusheng, Former Vice President of the National Museum of China

40 Rector Street, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10006

Date and time: Saturday, March 26, 2:00-4:00 pm
Location: China Institute, 40 Rector Street, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10006
Speaker: Xue Ma

年前,西方主流媒體(如《經濟學家》、《紐約時報》等紛紛載文,介紹洪又妮的新書《韓酷的誕生:一個國家是怎樣通過流行文化征服了世界》(The Birth of Korean Cool: How One Nation Is Conquering the World Through Pop Culture)。

Location: China Institute, 40 Rector Street, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10006
Speaker: Xu Baiyi

Void and Quietude in Wang Wei’s Poems

Date and Time: Saturday, Dec. 5, 2:00-4:00 pm
Location: China Institute, 100 Washington Street, New York, NY 10006
Speaker: Ben Wang

One of the master poets, painters and musicians of the High Tang Period, Wang Wei (701-761) is acclaimed in poetry in particular for his refreshing and exquisite depiction of a harmonious, sometimes idealized, union between Man and Nature and emptiness/ nothingness that is the essence of Buddhism. At this lecture, Mr. Ben Wang will discuss the representative poems by Wang Wei.

Saving China's Art: The Heiress, the Diplomat and the 'American Emperor'

Date and Time: Saturday, October 31, 2:00-4:00 pm.
Location: SUNY Global Center, 116 East 55th Street, New York, NY 10022
Speaker: Margaret Stocker

The Renwen Society at China Institute and the Confucius Institute for Business at SUNY Global Center jointly present an illustrated lecture on Saturday, Oct. 31 by Margaret Stocker, trustee of the India House Foundation, on a book she is writing: Saving China's Art: The Heiress, the Diplomat and the 'American Emperor.' The heiress, philanthropist and suffragist was Dorothy Payne Whitney Straight, whose fortune flowed from the Standard Oil Company. The diplomat, Willard Straight, collected Indo-Tibetan and Chinese bronzes and wall hangings in Manchuria and Korea while a correspondent for the Associated Press during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5 and then through 1911 under the US State Department's 'Open Door to China' policy. The 'American Emperor' is the title that the 13th Dalai Lama used to refer to Theodore Roosevelt.

The talk will feature the work of the Asiatic Institute, established by Dorothy and Willard Straight at India House, a private club in New York City they also founded. Ms. Stocker, formerly curator of the Collection at India House, has uncovered rare monographs published by the Asiatic Institute between 1913 and 1916 that reveal an international lobby to support Yuan Shikai and the newly established Republic of China and to save China's cultural treasures and establish a museum in Peking. Her book will document the 1000 paintings, prints, ship models, and nautical artifacts exhibited in the 'Old Cotton Exchange' on Hanover Square in 1914, which document America's expansion into the Pacific Basin in the nineteenth century.

This lecture is in English. Free, but advanced registration is requested.

Lecture: Early Life of Yuan Shikai and the Formation of the Yuan Family

Saturday, September 19 | 2:00PM-4:30PM. More at http://chineselectures.org/091915.html

Critical debates of the controversial political career of Yuan Shikai, first President of the Republic of China, have always been popular topics in the study of modern Chinese history, but accurate facts about Yuan’s personal life and his family are seldom available. Ms. Jiagan Yuan Gee, a granddaughter of Yuan Shikai, and Prof. Sheau-yueh J. Chao, both of CUNY will discuss the early life of Yuan Shikai before his rise to political prominence; the family structure of the Yuan family during and after Yuan’s time; and the lives of more prominent Yuan sons and daughters in the second and third generations. They will also address the strategy, procedures and significance of the research they used in co-authoring The Yuan Chronicle, a book written in English to be expected to come out next year.
